“I’m not sure I like this. I don’t even know if I fully understand what’s going on,” Call argued. Alpha hadn’t seen him look so uncomfortable in a while. He’d let Call look up the animal styles on the internet. The information, which was mostly inaccurate and hyped-up impossible moves portrayed in fake, Hollywood kung fu movies, left a bad taste in his cherished one’s mouth.

“I would prefer you get your information from me, John. It’d be far more accurate than what you’ll get on Wikipedia.”

“Babe, some of the fighting demonstrations look incredible, but I’m still not sure I get what these styles have to do with your brother and Lion.” Call shrugged, like what was the big fucking deal. “He wants to get with your brother, whoopty do. Why all the damn covert conversations with him? He seems alright, why don’t you just tell your brother to go for it? You seem to think Lion is on the up and up. If they don’t make that love connection, no harm, no foul. You move on. That’s life.”

“Typically. But not where we’re from. Lion has to be very careful.”

“What?! Why?! Just ask the guy out!” Call yelled. “What is he, scared?”

“If he’s anything like me, he’s probably petrified. This is a pairing that goes way beyond our understandings, and I’m okay with that. The two of them will do great things together if Omega can yield. It won’t be as easy as you’re making it sound. It surely wasn’t easy yielding to you. That takes courage and a type of strength and trust we don’t readily give to just anyone. That’s why we call our partners cherished ones and not boyfriends or fiancés or whatever. You all are so much more than that to us. As assassins, we know and face so much chaos and conflict, that when we’re lucky enough to face love, oh, it’s a celebration of the highest magnitude. And if Omega doesn’t comprehend why he has the urge to yield to Lion, he’ll never do it.”

“Now you’re losing me again.” Call rubbed his creased forehead.

“It wasn’t a term I thought you needed to know, per se, since the word yield would mean nothing to you in this context. It was something I had to come to terms with on my own. I was ‘the alpha.’ I’d only ever had to yield to my master, which means in simple terms that you accept the person as your leader and teacher. When you yield to another, you’re swearing your allegiance to that individual. Promising that you’ll adhere to this person’s philosophies and truly believe that anything they command is for the best. The person you yield to is not technically superior, either. You made it very clear that we are equals. You didn’t need my submission, but you did need my dedication and commitment. That’s also yielding. I left my Order, my brother, and came to build a life with you… I yielded to you, Call. To my cherished.
